I tried viewing this assignment using a "self-worth" attitude. It was difficult picking just 6 words to illustrate such a deep topic, but these words hold multiple meanings for me personally. It is actually a part of a song by a band called La Dispute, and this band completely changed my outlook on life.
About the time I started high school I began feeling depressed, stressed, and overall just had a great disdain for my day to day life and the people in it. I would actually go out of my way to distance myself from those around me to avoid building any lasting relationships. This feeling matured and remained for quite a few years. But this past Easter I had the opportunity to see La Dispute play in a cafe about the size of a classroom, and all the negative feelings vanished. Since that night I have held such a positive outlook on life and am truly grateful and amazed every single day. So those words, and any words written by them for that matter, will always remind me of the night I let go of the years of stress, guilt, and fear, and was finally able to live a normal life.
Here's one of my favorite songs by them if you were interested in what they sound like. Definitely not everyone's type of music, I know. haha.
I understand how you felt in your past couple of years. I, too, used to have lots of trouble in my life until my parents helped me, saying to let go of all the bad things in the past and look foward to a better future; it made things a whole lot better for me. And what helps me more is singing "Hakuna Matata" all day long(I'm sure you know what it means). :)
ReplyDeleteThat's the beauty of music! There have been songs/artists that totally have that affect on me when I'm in a bad or good mood. And La Dispute is such a wonderful band :)
ReplyDeleteBrad I am so glad to here that you had this ah ha moment when you when you were in the cafe listening to the band La Dispute. I have come to realize in my own life through many up and downs and highs that life is just to short and I am lucky to be alive and to enjoy every moment and be present in the moment.
ReplyDeleteWhat a coincidence.. I just got back from a road trip with my boyfriend and guess what was playing? Anyways, I'm happy to hear that you found something so meaningful to you. It's amazing what music can do for a person!
ReplyDeleteI also struggled to choose only 6 words that could explain years worth of thoughts that came into my mind!
ReplyDeleteI thought this exercise was the hardest too. I struggled with self-worth for many years too. No one told me 7th grade and on would be the hardest years of your life. haha. But, that's why we turn to alternative forms of self worth. Like Cassie said that's the beauty of music! Of course, I'm glad you found a band that helps to remind you of your self worth. :) What were the 6 words you ended up using?
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time too finding six word. I like the music that you put.
